Raw Cacao

It’s not often that a skincare post can work in a reference to Quetzalcoatl, but here we are. Several Granola Goat products contain one of the most decadent skincare ingredients ever used – chocolate. More specifically, raw cacao. This uncooked form retains more of the amazing benefits from cacao seeds (roasted = cocoa powder).

Cacao has been consumed with adoration for thousands of years. The Aztec people believed the seeds were a gift from Quetzalcoatl, the god of wind and wisdom, and were so prized that they were even used as currency at one point. Scientists have confirmed the presence of chocolate beverages in ceramic vessels that are over 3,000 years old – proving our love for chocolate is more than a passing fad.

As if I have to ask, what’s so great about chocolate? Well, it’s packed with vitamins and minerals – you may already know it contains iron and magnesium, but did you know it packs more iron than spinach and over 40 times the antioxidants of blueberries? Wow. For consumption, choose pure cacao nibs over an option containing dairy (dairy can interfere with the absorption of the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals found in cacao). Cacao also contains phenethylamine (PEA) which triggers the release of endorphins and is a chemical we produce in our bodies when we fall in love. Anandamide, a.k.a. the bliss chemical, is also present in cacao – in fact, it’s the only plant in the world it has ever been found in.

With it’s rich history and cultural significance, it’s ability to nourish as well as alter moods, could there be anything else to love about cacao? Oh, yes… the smell. If you’re a fan of the scent of pure chocolatey sweetness, you’re going to love mixing up the Venus box mask. Want to see cacao beans being harvested, fermented, and dried?
