Facial steams might be something you think are reserved for a professional facial. That beautiful steam spewing machine they have is fantastic, but it’s not necessary for the modern DIY skincare expert like yourself. While an at home steam won’t be as ‘steamy’ as the pro’s, you will reap benefits – including the mental benefit of doing something fancy for yourself and relaxing to enjoy it. Just breathe for a minute.
Your skin will benefit from a facial steam (even if it’s only a little warm – don’t overdo it) in several ways. It’s wonderful to open your pores and release dirt and oil from your skin. It increases circulation and readies your skin for treatment, whether that be a nourishing face mask, or just a nice face oil.
Facial Steam Instructions:
- Start with a makeup free face. No need to use a cleanser if skin is makeup free, just wipe with a damp cloth. Make sure your hair is tied back out of your face.
- Boil about 2 cups of distilled water (distilled is important if you plan to save the brewed water for later use).
- Pour your steam ingredients into a bowl.
- Add the boiling water and cover with a plate to allow ingredients to steep for 2 minutes.
- Remove plate and lean over the water with a towel draped over your head.
- Breathe deeply and relax for 5 to 7 minutes.
To save the water from the facial steam, pour water through a handheld strainer (if using a reusable tea bag, simply remove the bag) and into a spouted measuring cup. Now the water is easy to transfer into a spray bottle or other clear glass container for later use. Keep refrigerated for up to two weeks. Add ¼ teaspoon of apple cider vinegar per each 2 ounces of brew if desired.
Indulge in a facial steam no more than once a week. For skin with conditions that are aggravated by heat, such as psoriasis or severe acne, skip the steam and instead follow steps 2-4 to brew the herbs and flowers. Use chilled as a toner, mask activator, or hair rinse.
